Local Weeds:

Mesquite - Prosopis spp.

There are currently three known species of mesquite plus a hybrid present in Queensland. Mesquite has also been commonly called algaroba, Cloncurry prickle bush, or Quilpie algaroba.

Species vary in growth characteristics. Mesquite can occur as a multi-stemmer shurb with branches drooping to the ground, around 3-5m high, or as a single-stemmed tree with a spreading canopy growing to 15m.

Older bark is rough and grey or brown. Small branches have smooth bark, dark red or green in colour, and a zigzag shape. Mesquite can appear rather untidy with individual zigzagged twigs sticking out beyond the main canopy.

Mesquite is a Class 1 declared plant of Queensland.

Fact Sheet on Mesquite can be found on the Department of Natural Resources and Water website.
